WACE's "Why Learn Chinese" Awards Ceremony
More than seventy middle and high school students from across the state wrote, videoed, and sang their reasons (in English) about why they thought Chinese was important for our first statewide "Why Learn Chinese Competition". The names of the grand prize winner, two second place winners, and three third place winners were announced on Saturday, January 28, during an awards ceremony at the Seattle Chinese Garden’s Chan Education Center. There, many of the top-scoring entries were on display and, in several cases, performed. The event received media coverage and began with a reception, followed by remarks and an awards presentation. Among those speaking were Chunman Gissing - president of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Washington, Jonathan Geiger - president of the Seattle Chinese Garden Board of Directors, Hong Qi - president of the Seattle Chongqing Sister-City Association Board of Directors, and Donna Tang - Director of the Confucius Institute of Washington.
